Scuba Diving In The Andaman Sea
The Andaman Sea has traditionally been used for fishing and the transport of goods between the communities living on the coastline. Today, the coral reefs and uninhabited islands have become a popular tourist destination. The islands and beaches of southern Thailand are the ideal spots for tourists who are looking for breathtaking landscapes, scuba diving nightlife entertainment. The largest and most popular of the island destinations is Phuket because of the fabulous scenery and heavenly beaches.
In the Andaman Sea, the season for scuba diving and snorkelling is from November to April when underwater visibility ranges from 10 meters to 40 meters and more. From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings in its wake heavy seas, increased turbidity and strong currents. Most of the time, underwater visibility ranges between 10 meters to 20 meters.
Tides can rise twice a day with amplitude of about 2.70 meters. Average air temperature ranges from 26oC to 32oC while water temperature ranges from 27oC to 29oC. However, the Similan Islands including Surin and Burma banks may be subjected to sudden cold steep temperature that can chill the water to 5oC to 7oC.
The Andaman Sea particularly the western coast of Thailand is blessed with coral reefs, marine life and offshore islands with spectacular topography. The islands are very attractive to tourists who want to experience diving and snorkelling. At least 16 of the islands are marine national parks with some of them considered for inclusion to UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The national parks of Similan and Surin islands are considered as one of the top destinations for scuba divers. Similan Islands also host many of the endangered fauna species that include the whale shark, devil mantra ray, dugong and some dolphin species.
