The Phenomenon Of Nuptial Flight
No one in his right mind would want pests to invade the home. Aside from being unhealthy, there are pests like termites that can damage the home’s structure. Bedbugs could disturb a good night’s sleep because it is the perfect opportunity to suck your blood. Pest control and maintenance is the reason why home exterminator services are very popular right now.
On the first sunny day after the first weekend with rain, thousands of winged insects can be observed all over Israel. The winged insects are ants and termites that have grown wings within their colony. They swarm the streets in broad daylight looking for mates and establish new colonies.
Davidson Institute of Science Education calls the phenomenon as the “nuptial flight” or the mating flight of insects like social bees and ants. These creatures that are more popularly known as “winged sexuals” emerge from their hiding places when the temperature and humidity is acceptable to them. It usually correlates with the first rain of the season. The insects gather at a certain area and start their nuptial flight.
Igor Armiach Steinpress of the Davidson Institute said that a few hours after the first rain, royal ants that are direct offspring’s of the queen ant and termites that have sprouted wings will congregate by their nests before they fly. The area surrounding the nests will have a silver-like hue to effectively turn the surface into an airstrip for thousands of breeding insects.
According to Steinpress, ants are not competent fliers so that they could only fly for a few times if not once throughout their lifespan. Humans will often experience ants landing on them because they are searching for potential mates. After mating, the queen flies away to build another new colony where she can reign as queen. Meanwhile, the male will be left to die because he has accomplished his mission.
The phenomenon is not dangerous to humans but when the winged termites establish colonies in your property, you need to call home exterminator services to prevent serious structural damages. Termites are attracted to wood because it is the source of their meals. Protect your property at all costs through appropriate pest control.
