What do you feel when looking at a custom map artwork of your region? Do you feel nostalgic and intrigued or do you get that sudden feeling of identification? The objective of road maps is to provide information that will help you find your way but custom maps are different. They contain what the illustrator wants to give you.

There is usually some advertising behind pictorial maps and this determines what the map illustrator will show. If the purpose of the map is to sell tourism, it will focus on a landscape. The creative imagination of the map illustrator will draw the attention of viewers.

In the 1920’s, the economy of the United States was booming. There was more than enough money to spend for advertising. Commercial designers chose pictorial maps as a way of promoting a product. Almost every state in the US had a designer who can create maps very quickly. It isn’t surprising why there were literally hundreds of thousands pictorial maps printed during that era.

There was great potential for designers to work in different states and let their imagination run free. Sometimes, Miami was represented as a sun-drenched paradise as opposed to industrial Ohio. There is also the powerful American culture that Walt Disney used to the fullest. Pictorial maps with Walt Disney cartoon characters were used to sell Disneyland in the 1950’s.

The golden era of pictorial maps was the 1920’s and 1930’s; however, its popularity begun to wane by the 50’s and 60’s. The pioneer artists have retired and there were new techniques to sell products like colored photographs. Instead of an expensive pictorial map showing an area, advertisers chose tourist brochures with photographs.

Pictorial maps may not be as popular today but still they provide people with something different. Google Maps is loaded with information but lacks the subtlety and sophistication of an artist’s creation.

You can commission a custom map artwork to advertise a resort, campus, city or town. There are map illustrators who can hand draw a particular area and deliver a realistic feeling or attraction. Each custom map will include the message that you want to impart to your audience and information relevant to the message.
